Following what has been an incredibly impactful time for him these last few years, Chicago native Jon Le Vert is back to his best once again as he delivers his eagerly-awaited new album 'wish u well'.
Returning with a sprawling fifteen-track release, 'wish u well' continues to build that broad and emotive nature he is known for. With its raw and ethereal tones set to his compelling vocals throughout, he returns to the fold with some of his more impactful efforts to date here.
So with the new LP available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?Â
Admittedly, my earliest memories were me in front of the TV, trying to copy Michael Jackson’s dance moves. He was the quintessential American star- a global star even. Plus he kinda looked like me so I guess it was easy to admire his persona, accomplishments and frankly… great music.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?Â
Nah, I didn’t really see myself as a music artist until a few years ago- I took guitar lessons in middle school & In high school I briefly tried making beats thru FL Studio, but it was never really collaborative. Plus I was a hip-hop head back then. These days I would love to be a drummer- for some reason it appeals to me more than ever before.Â
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?Â
At first, my upbringing & backstory to an extent. As of late, it’s my life & the events surrounding it. It’s mental health, family, drugs. Though I wanna say this will be the last album that leans on the personal side. I tend to gravitate toward love songs because love, sex & relationships (or lack thereof) are so universal.Â
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?Â
The Knowing by The Weeknd- it’s so dope to me. Relatable, beautiful, well crafted. It’s everything I want in a song.Â
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?Â
The pandemic era I’d say… would’ve made some different financial decisions lol.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?Â
That’s hard to answer, there’s so many… I feel like an emo band would be sick. They tend to go hard for their live shows, jumping around & shit.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?Â
Kanye in his prime, for sure.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?Â
Hopefully financially secure with a solid following & a few classics under my belt… It’s on me to make it happen, tho.
