After an incredible run of releases these last few years, German artist LaRegina recently returned to the fold with her stunning new single 'In Charge'.
Capturing more of that reggae-infused aesthetic she is known for, 'In Charge' makes for an incredibly rich and immersive listen. With her smooth and shimmering voice layered across a groove-filled production throughout, she is continuing her ascent as one of the more exciting names on the rise right now.
So with the new single out now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
I fell in love with the voice of Mariah Carey the first time I heard her singing “Without you” on MTV. Her voice and elegant appearance just blew me away.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Yes, I was part of a school band for about a year when I was 15 years old. We only did cover songs like "Hit the Road Jack" so we basically sounded like a young cover band. I was not so much invested in the project, since I was young and still trying to figure out what I wanted and who I wanted to be. I remember we had a gig once and a lady from a local newspaper briefly approached me telling me, "Your voice is amazing, you have to make it work," and walked away. I will never forget that.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
To express myself in order to feel free. Being creative is and has always been my nature, I have an artist soul that chose writing music the most.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
This is not an easy question and I have no clear answer, since I think songs are just supposed to be written from the person that wrote the song.
"Ex- Factor" from Lauryn Hill, "One of Us" written by Eric Bazilian or "The Truth" by India Arie. These are all amazing songs with strong lyrics and melodies, but I don't know if I wish I had written them.
But maybe If I had written "All I Want for Christmas" by Mariah Carey I would have been lucky, calling a sweet classic my own coming back effortlessly every year.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
Not really, as I look out for the future.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Since the vibe needs to be high, I choose Snoop Dogg.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
This is depending on the vibe as well, but a track with Protoje or Chronixx would be incredible. However, with every artist I share a vision and vibe with could be a possible collaboration partner.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Being busy hitting festival stages with my band, enjoying life, and being grateful for all my blessings.
