Following on from the release of his much-loved debut album 'Black Mirror' and follow-up EP 'Sorry Not Sorry' in 2021, New York-based artist MattGordon has now made his long-awaited return with the shimmering new single 'Never Rains Forever'.
Taking his cues from Prince with its warm and electrifying appeal, 'Never Rains Forever' makes for a brilliantly rich and tantalising listen. With his sweet and emotive vocal performance layered across a vibrant production from start to finish, he is returning to the fold with one of his most powerful efforts yet.
So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
Probably Chris Brown. The first CD I ever got as a kid was his and he was a huge inspiration to me. I would sing and dance to his songs at every school talent show. As a kid, he was definitely my generation’s Michael Jackson. The way he performed, his music videos, his music - all greatly influenced me growing up.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I actually did in high school! We were called “Matt & Cheese”, a corny play on “Mac & Cheese” lol. It was me as the lead singer, and a few friends in the background who could dance. Very unofficial, and we never recorded any music. We just did talent shows where I sang covers and we all did hip-hop choreo.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
I feel like music is such a powerful thing in itself. The way melodies and lyrics can heal people. The way a song can bring you back in time, or stamp time, like a time-machine. The way a song can make you feel seen/heard. The way a song can bring you into a completely new world. I have a genuine love for music and it’s been something that’s always been apart of my life since birth. So for that reason I’m always inspired by it.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
There’s this old song that I don’t think many people know of, called Best Friend by RaVaughn. The concept and melody is so genius to me. I just said the other day “I wish I wrote this and put my own twist to it”! It was written and produced by the legendary Babyface.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
A few months ago I played my song “Good Lovin’” for legendary producer Timbaland. He played the song in full back to back, got up and danced each time, and called the song a hit. He’s one of my biggest influences, so it was an out of body experience to have him listen to my song and react the way he did. Any doubt I had about my voice, writing, or artistry went out the window after that.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Great question. Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, and Janet Jackson. A joint tour with all of us would be sick too.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
It’s always been a dream of mine to do something with Missy Elliott. I think we’re both on the same weird/creative wavelength, and I know the song and video would be insane. Would love to collaborate with Bruno Mars too… I actually have a record on my upcoming EP that I think he would sound so dope on. So Bruno, if you’re reading this interview, holla at me lol.
