Having already established herself with a vibrant array of releases these last few years, US artist Melinda Valenz is back once again with her breezy new single 'Mm-Hmm'.
Conjuring more of that soulful R&B-inspired aesthetic she has been crafting over the years, 'Mm-Hmm' makes for a wonderfully fresh and alluring listen. With her spellbinding vocals spread across a riveting production throughout, she continues to shine as one of the more emotive names on the rise right now.
So with the new single out now, we sat down with her to discuss her origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
I remember hearing “Love Takes Time” by Mariah Carey and instantly fell in love with her vocals. The way she conveyed such deep emotion through her voice really resonated with me.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Yes, I was in a Christian rock band when I was 14, and we played at youth events. By 16, I found my true passion for soulful singing and joined a girls’ R&B group. It was a pivotal moment in discovering my musical style.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
Right now, I’m inspired by the idea of writing fun, uplifting songs that people can sing along to. I love playful melodies but also try to incorporate the message that self-confidence is key.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
“Ordinary People” by John Legend. The rawness and authenticity of the lyrics, combined with the real-life storytelling, make it a song I deeply admire.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
Singing on the legendary “Showtime at the Apollo” stage in Harlem, NY. If I could relive that, I wouldn’t be so nervous this time!
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
There are too many to name! But if I had to pick, Madison Ryann Ward, Allen Stone, Bruno Mars, and Alicia Keys would be at the top of the list.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Bruno Mars, Allen Stone, and Chandler Moore. I know, they’re all so different! That’s what I love about music – it’s all about blending different sounds and creating something unique.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
I hope to be a Grammy winner! I see myself performing, traveling, and connecting with people around the world through my music.
