GET TO KNOW: ROJS

Having already cemented himself with a string of vibrant releases this past year, Slovenian artist ROJS is back on the grind once again to offer up his wondrous new single 'You Now'.

Bringing back more of that heartfelt, piano-led aesthetic he has quickly earned a reputation for, 'You Now' makes for a wonderfully warm and inviting return. With its tender textures and sweeping atmosphere layered throughout, he continues to shine as one of the more mesmerising names on the rise right now.

So with the new track out now, we sat down with him to discuss his origins and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

I think, funnily enough, the first band/artist I fell in love with was Coldplay. The album I was obsessed with was Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. The title track was just immaculate, and I absolutely fell in love with it. If you want to go back even more, I guess you could say Justin Bieber.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

I actually had a band that did not honestly last long. It was an emo post-hardcore band called After The Rainbows because I was really deep into the whole Pierce The Veil, Sleeping With Sirens, Warped Tour scene. But nothing fruitful came out of that because I kind of grew out of the scene and got interested in making more “pop” music.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

The whole thing started actually when I wanted to be in a band. The problem was I did not know where to begin even with writing songs, so I started trying to write songs, and the whole introspection thing kind of took over. The whole songwriting process is really weirdly spiritual, and it takes a lot of honesty with yourself that you can kind of bury away otherwise.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Ah, probably Fame by Bowie. Everything about that song is kind of surreal in one sense or another.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

Probably being at Abbey Road Studios. It really was an interesting experience to be recording at the same place as The Beatles.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Nieve Ella. I adore her; all of her songs are just plain amazing.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

Oh yes, Holly Humberstone. I love her songwriting and her vocals. I cried to her songs so many times.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

That’s a funny question. My career goal is to sell out The Wembley Arena in London. Will that happen in 5 years’ time? I guess we’ll see. But there are definitely going to be a lot more songs out by then.
