GET TO KNOW: The Buzz Kills

Writer's picture: The Real DingThe Real Ding

With a string of fresh and exciting bangers under their belts already these last few months, Australian power-rock duo The Buzz Kills are back once again with another anthemic release '21st Century Mayhem'.

Bringing back more of that bright and soaring aesthetic they are known for, '21st Century Mayhem' makes for an impressive and powerful return to form. Filled with glittering textured, killer hooks, and an incredibly catchy chorus to boot, these two are certainly onto something very special here.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their background and what has been inspiring them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you learned to play?

Guitar – taught to me by my dad (he was number 1 in the charts in UK, Europe and Australia the day I was born).

What was the first album you remember owning?

The Cranberries, and R.E.M (Everybody Hurts was the first song I learned on guitar).

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

Hahaha yeh, mine (nathalie’s was called string teeth with Rob Clarke and Simon and sounded like heavy rock, with a twist of UK indie pop probably quite shit with hindsight, but we all start somewhere) hahaha

Sam - Kenny P and the vomits (heavy rock and roll)

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Dance Monkey springs to mind – a massive global banger that could propel us to any stage in the world would be perfect please.

What has been the most thrilling moment about creating your own music?

Hearing the end result, smashing out some high notes, and when the dance floor is rammed and people are going off their heads dancing and loving it

And what about the most frustrating part?

Getting it heard. 40,000 singles released globally a week – it’s hard to cut through the noise and get your music heard. Oh, and spotify being so illusive and not supportive of emerging artists (e.g unless you are established, have 1000+followers on spotify then you are aren’t eligible for the marquee marketing, yet they don’t let you market via playlists so it’s a vicious circle and one which is almost impossible to break) the music business is an insane one which should be regulated as it’s pretty sewn up and giants want monopoly and are making it so hard for emerging indie artists.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

The Killers.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Hopefully looking back on some tremendous gigs and a top ten hit! We just scored ARA #4 and #23 in the world on Christmas Colab with Jam Mountain music, but to achieve top 20 as an artist in our own right would be the bomb! Pretty excited we just got booked to play at Frankie’s in Sydney which is one of Australia's most iconic rock and roll live music venues!!
